I've recently fallen into the habit of reading about fishing in bed before nodding off - as opposed to actually fishing, because reading takes less time! This most recent literary craze partly started when, out of mild curiosity, I bought a cheap paperback edition in a Barnes & Noble (while waiting on my girlfriend to make her selections) of COD - THE FISH THAT CHANGED THE WORLD, by Mark Kurlansky. It was a very informative history - a real page-turner (for me), and a good substitute for actually getting out on the water.

So now ... my planned reading list has grown:

(DONE) Cod - A history of the Fish that Changed the World, by Kurlansky

(IN-PROGRESS) From Hooks to Harpoons, by Mick Kronman

(TBD) Herring Tales: How the Silver Darlings Shaped Human Taste and History, by Donald S. Murray

(TBD) Tuna: Love, Death, and Mercury, by Richard Ellis

(TBD) King of Fish: The Thousand Year Run of Salmon, by David R. Montgomery

^^^ All of these have their varying points of view, authorship, and emphases... but I've previewed all and they seem promising!

Anyone want to share recommends of books about fishing history, conservation issues, or commercial fishing life? Thanks in advance for sharing.

Subject: Good reads regarding fishing

Since I recently fell ill (Thanks Roommates!), I purchased some reading material.
Linda Greenlaw's “All fisherman are liars”
To my surprise I finished this book in two days. I could hardly put it down, lets see if MtnViewFisher has the same reaction. My question to all of you is, what if any books would you recommend to all of your fishing buddies regarding this very topic... Fishing? I am not a read-o-holic, but fishing has consumed most of my life these past few months and I can't seem to get enough. Thanks all you book worms!

Main Selection

Alden, Peter and Heath, Fred, National Audubon Society Field Guide to California. Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1998.
Review: A good general guide to all of the major species a fisherman might run into in the Bay Area, from lingcod to sea lions.

Cannon, Ray, How to Fish the Pacific Coast. Lane Book Co., Menlo Park, CA, 1964.
Review: Fun, bombastic, but often interesting. Dated. Absolutely no mention of the role of tides in saltwater fishing!

Chatham, Russell D., Striped Bass on The Fly: A Guide for California Waters. Examiner Special Projects, San Francisco, CA, 1977.
Review: Focus is on striped bass and fly fishing, but the locations mentioned in the book are proven.

Cuanang, Abe, San Francisco Striper. Angler Publications, Oakland, 1983.
Review: If you fish for striped bass in the Bay Area, this is a must-read.

Fraser, Keith, Keith Fraser's Guide to Sturgeon Fishing. Loch Lomond Live Bait and Tackle Shop, San Rafael, 1996.
Review: It was written by The Man.

Fuller, Harry, Now and Then: San Francisco’s Natural History. Self-Published, San Francisco, 2001.

Howorth, Peter, Foraging Along the California Coast, Capra Press, Santa Barbara, 1977.
Review: An excellent book on everything from harvesting abalone to pier fishing. Heavily dated in the fish and game regulations, but if you fish, claim, dive, harvest abalone, gather seaweed, or take anything else consumable on the Pacific coast, find this book.

Jones, Ken. Pier Fishing in California, 2nd Edition.

Leet, William S, Dewees, Christopher M., Klingbeil, Richard, Larson, Eric J. Editors. California’s Living Marine Resources: A Status Report. 2001.
Review: Pricey and difficult to find, but a comprehensive guide fish caught via commerical and recreational means. Also chapters on non fish marine species, the different marine environments, and pollution.

Love, Milton, Probably More Than You Want To Know About Fishes Of The Pacific Coast. Really Big Press, Santa Barbara, 1996.
Review: Mandatory reading.

Stienstra, Tom, California Fishing, Foghorn Press, Emeryville, CA, 1998.
Review: Both more and less useful than would seem to at first glance. As Songslinger once pointed out, the chapter on Poke Poling ("The Sea Wolf") is excellent.

Others

Amos, Williiam H., The Life of the Seashore. McGraw-Hill Book Company, New York, 1966.

Curtis, Brian, The Warm Water Game Fishes of California. California Division of Fish and Game, October 1949.
Review: Good section, including a color plate suitable for framing, of a striped bass.

Emory, Jerrry, San Francisco Bay Shoreline Guide: A California State Coastal Conservancy Book. University of California Press, Berkelely, 1995.
Review: An excellent overview of SF Bay, already a bit dated. Pick it up used.

George, Gerald and Rights, Mollie, The Moveable Fleet: A Boatwatcher’s Guide to San Francisco Bay. California Living Books, San Francisco, 1979.

Gilliam, Harold, San Francisco Bay. Doubleday, Garden City, New York, 1957.
Required reading.

Hayden, Mike. Pier Fishing on San Francisco Bay. The Complete Guide to Public Piers Around San Francisco Bay. Chronicle Books, San Francisco, 1982.
Review: A book of only moderate usefulness. Seek only as a curio.

Review: An easy read

Bigfoot ain't no fool, serious IQ up in here, LOL!

Posted by bigfoot

The list is actually a bibliography from, ah, a writing project I'm working on. A few people know about it. Several months ago I decided to export the bibliography and write a few pithy reviews in case this subject ever came up.

I've probably read 3/4 of the books on the list and own all of them. I've read all of the main books and most of the secondaries. Some are dry pocket reference guides that are not particularly interesting until you come across something in your cast net or on the beach that you've never seen before.

I would have to say that one of the most interesting is the book that profiles types of seagoing vessels one might see in SF Bay, from potluck boats to supertankers. One more thing to keep an eye on while fishing. I also left out various books on birds that I have--I've really gotten into bird watching in the last year or so. I find I can't read while fishing, which would be the ideal scenario, so I've started to get into watching the things that are in the background while I'm observing my rod.

Some of the most interesting books are coming on 30 years old now. It was hard to find them at first, until I wised up and started querying eBay and Amazon (the latter their connections with used book dealers.) I regularly troll used book stores, flea markets, and garage sales. The occasional gem pops up that makes it worthwhile.

One last recommendation: On The Run. I forget the author's name, it came out last year. The author chases the striped bass run from Maine to North Carolina during the course of one year.

David DiBenedetto is the author. Can buy on Amazon

I liked the book the "Perfect Storm" where Linda Greenlaw is prominently mentioned. The best fishing book I have ever read is John Hersey's "Blues" whcih details the history, techniques for catching and recipes among other topics about the bluefish that cover the New England waters.

"A Liar's Guide to Fishing" by Ben Goode, $6.95+2.00shp, ISBN 1-885027-26-5, Apricot Press, PO Box 1611, American Fork, Utah 84003, tel: 801-756-0456.
Gut wrenchingly hilarious, worth every cent, any angler can relate to what's inside. Hope your feeling better, if not, this book will do it.

I have yet to read them though. I had one of the books given to me by a brother. Slinger has a lot of books he recommends in his website. Huckleberry Finn is kinda tired if you ask me (my opinion) but if you are (10) it is cool. I like Herman Melville novels. Jack London gives you that same kind of read. Other than that, Fish I.D. books with color pictures and hey, there is one good book I like, I think it is called something like , Pier , Pier something or other, LOL Wink
I don't read much,......... my lips get too tired!

With all the helpful folks at pfic, coastside, ncka, ect, to answer most questions and arrange experience fishing buddies, the most useful kind of book is a generalized reference type book that can be used for ID and whatnot in the field. PFIC is perfect for that because it covers 90% of CA sport fish.

Here's a good one too. “Tales of the golden years of California Ocean Fishing 1900-1950” by Ed Ries. Love that autobiography.

Yes, an interesting look at the way things used to be on San Francisco Bay.
