These were taken within the last couple weeks.
they both were released after photo op.

Disclaimer: I do not know either fisherman but they said I could post their pics.
This is not my report. Just some fish porn.

Unfortunately, Martinez isn't the exception. Every pier I fish seems to have people with no regard for the regulations. The new normal seems to be "if I want to keep 30 8" stripers, then I can because I want them". Many today seem to think that the laws only apply to things that affect others. (No, not making any inference to anyone on this board)

Beautiful fish. Hope they were released..... That big one in the 2nd picture should not have been taken out of the water (IMHO)......

That's not the issue. The issue is the apparent handling (or mishandling) of said sturgeon.

I think you are missing the point.

The law says that sturgeon greater than 68 inches fork length may not be removed from the water.

Unless the person laying down on the pier and posing alongside that beast is less than 5 feet tall, I'd say he was breaking the law and decreasing the likelihood that that fish is going to survive the encounter.

I believe the photo should be taken down.

Here is a flier about newish changes to the sturgeon regulations:

https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentId=58288

The flier is not a complete list of the sturgeon regulations, so folks should read the regulations booklet.

How the heck do you get a fish that big on-deck without a gaff?

He climbed under the pier with a 4ft ring net and scooped it. Took 4 guys to haul out of the water.
I agree it never should have left the water but it was not gaffed or snared.
