Parking is free and should be plentiful that early in the day.

Here is an old post. Notice the parking lot in the first few pictures.

I was the first one at the pier around 6:45 AM, after living home around 4:20 AM. Shortly after others arrived and we got to work.

1-The UPSAC crew is busy cutting and bagging various baits to be given out to the kids.

2-The happy crew hard at work.

3-Other volunteers busy getting the loaner rods ready.

4-The participants are signing up.

5-Young and old helped at the derby.

6-The kids spread out on the both side of the pier.

7-

8-The head of the tournament from IGFA is giving pre-Derby instructions.

It was a slow fishing day. Most kids got a small lizard fish. There were some mackerel in the mix.

There were lots of short halibut for the anglers who were using live bait. One derby participant caught a 21.5” one that also was released.

9-Hey Jed (jellyfish), I did not know you were coming!

10-NOAA research ship coming back from its mission.

11-Grandfather is teaching grandson the art of fishing.

12- Classic shot…… He is even wearing grandpa’s fishing vest including the river net in the back.

13-This shot is for Gordo Grande. Fish tacos by Catalina Seafood Wholesale. Yum Yum. I had four.

14-Tommy Gomez of Catalina Seafood, setup his kitchen to provide us with his delicious tacos. We all enjoyed thresher shark taco prepared by them.
Picture from 2008.

Tommy is standing next to Vic with a dark blue shirt. Vic is one of the organizers of the event. He shocked me few years back when he spoke Turkish to me. He had learned some while in the service at one the bases there. Now we try to speak it whenever possible to practice it. A very nice hard working man.

15-Our famous member Thomas and his father were there as usual. They came all the way from the Bay area. He placed first in his division.

16-One of the reasons that recycling fishing line is so important.

17-The famous and great looking family.

18-One of the few good sized mackerel caught during the derby.

19-This Navy ship can detect over hundred incoming missiles at the same time, I am told.

20-The presentation of the prizes & certificates.

I loved the hat worn by the gentleman in the yellow T shirt.

Afterward I spend some time doing some underwater recording. Later I kept the Skipper company while he was catching fish after fish while others were standing around and getting board.

I left the pier around 7:00 pm.

The End.

Let us share our similarities, and celebrate our differences.
