Pictures taken last Saturday. On the opposite side of the water is the Fruitvale Bridge Pier in Alameda, a pier that is currently closed. This is considered excellent striper water and the one gentleman fishing said he comes out most weeks after work and casts for stripers.

If you fish at night I would recommend being in a group. During the day it should be OK, in fact I fished there last Saturday for three hours. Only problem was keeping the shiners off the hooks.

If they catch you fishing there you risk a ticket.

Huh, Chris, the only reason I don't fish it is because I couldn't figure out the tides and the size swimbait to use in the current there. There are some big bass in there and Veteran's Court Pier at the right time of year (winter/spring). All I have been able to catch is baitfish and there a few pile perch that hang on the Alameda side. Phong and John used fish that pier and do their thing, but they are the rough, strewn type of pierrats that Slinger is always mentioning in his writings.

Ken, did you make it to Fortman Marina Pier in Alameda at 1535 Buena Vista???

I remember fishing there once about 2 years ago, but since the pier was closed, we went to the left side bank of the pier, about 200 yards down. Any idea if that should be ok? or still no fishing there?

Thanks!!

On my visit last Saturday I did encounter one guy with a few loose marbles. He came striding out to the end of the pier carrying what looked like a large floor mat and proceeded to fling it out into the water while mumbling to himself. He then proceeded to come over and ask the inevitable, "hey bro could you spare some change. I have money in the bank but can't get to it today." I gave him the thirty five cents in my pocket; figured he needed it worse than me.

Another guy in an A's shirt was having an animated conversation with a Bluetooth and was apparently unhappy at someone. But I approached him with some fishing questions, gave him a large jacksmelt that I caught, and proceeded to have a nice talk with him.

The third guy that showed up was a local tossing swimbaits for bass. Said he did it weekly when he got off work.

There also were a couple of homeless guys that looked like their lodging was in a carved out section of the bank adjacent to the pier. I remember one guy stopping by and asking if they were doing OK.

So yes, it's definitely an urban pier and you need to be aware of what's going on around you. But, I also had a nice visit and enjoyed it even if action was slow.

Additional information: Justin, Minnow Magnet says that "you will be charged for tresspassing and the Alameda police department will be called if you are spotted fishing on the Alameda Pier

On the Alameda side there are other places around the pier and along the water from Marina Village all the way to Bay Farm (Veteran's Court Pier) where you can drive through, throw some lures, drive, throw some lures and keep moving if you are trying to get stripers. If you want batray fun, just about anywhere you can access the water like the backside of Marina Village all the way along Buena Vista past the Fortman Marina, the Grand Street dock up to the 23rd and High Street Bridge. Both sides, Oakland and Alameda are just "run and gun." I wouldn't commit myself to somewhere like Fruitvale Bridge (either day or night) for more than a minute. I will drive by all of these places day and night to see what its fish-ability looks like. Mostly, Fruitvale had/has the homeless guy sleeping under the pier which is the only issue other than some loud talking and drinking and smoking. I would have a greater issue fishing Candlestick Point at night (especially when my car is right in plain-view 100 feet away from me at Fruitvale). But, down the block, I prefer the solitude of the High Street Bridge fishing at night or near Oakland's Embarcadero (23rd St. Union Pier), Oakland's Estuary Park, or near the airport off Doolittle/Fernside or Island Drive; even the southend of the beach has striper/batray at night on an incoming.

When the halibut season is in full swing (somewhere between late March and July when they come into the bay to spawn), there will be as many as thirty "regulars" lined up. They are irritable, rough-hewn fellows, but they will yield crucial information if you ask. This rigging is only one of many possibilities. Experiment and observe and you should do well.

Proves I must be a member of the aforesaid group of Neanderthals in good standing! Wink
