Stopped by the pier this afternoon to cool off with that afternoon breeze that rolls thru the golden gate, it's been a warm day but out on the end of the pier is instant AC.

The big school of smelt that was at the mouth of the bay last week moved on but a few were out there with bobbers, I only saw one caught.

I did my usual popping around under the pier technique, using market shrimp this time. My score:

-1 decent size brown RF
-4 little brown RF thrown back
-2 undersize greenling released
-2 perch-I never take them, released
-1 fat RF that got off at the surface.not landed
-1 solid tug that almost took my rod outta my hand
(I get many small bait thieves, that one was big)

Then the bite dropped so I went home to eat & listen to the game.

Man that tug was fat!!! ...Grrrr

It could have been a mud marlin. I caught a few of those there before.

RF's can be caught from the pier?

Most likely not, the tug went straight under the pier, sturgeon & batrays take off out to open water.

Probably a decent size RF or another similar type that uses the pier as a reef for cover.

I do it all the time, just drop your line right down in front of the pier, just be ready to lift & reel as soon as you get hit or they'll snag you up under the pilings. They bite and run for cover usually, so be fast like quick draw McGraw.
