I'm heading to the MB aquarium either 6/2 or 6/3. Any suggestions for spots nearby? I was thinking the MB wharf or the coast guard jetty? I've never been to either and I don't know what the deal is with the jetty. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Wharf for macks and sardines, CGJ for rockfish and perch. Good luck!

The wharf is only good when there's schools of bait in the area. Or for sight-seeing. It's worth a stroll on sunny days, but for fishing--hit the jetty. Other nearby options w/b rockfishing off Cannery Row, rockfishing in PG past Lovers Pt, or surf fishing the beach in Monterey for perch/stripers.

Yea, I've heard that the CGP is banging out the Lings right now, you'll have to deal with the "new" fence they've built, If you can, try to find an oriental (or as I call'em) lil'viet-nam market and see if they have any whole (head on) shrimp! the bait is absolutely outstanding! plus if you can find any pile worms, they're the next best thing! Walk out all the way out on the "pier" to the fence and fish in that corner, unless, ofcourse, that MANIAC M-Bay is there already, then son, your outta luck!...mutt.

Just kiddin about the M-Bay crack! He's actually a very nice guy who is one heck of a fisherman! Which way are ya going to Monterey? Theres gotta be towns all along the way, mexican meat markets alot of times has the head-on shrimp too, or you can get it before you leave the house and ice it down, I forgot to mention frozen "birds eye" peas, there are a ton of "super size" Opaleye in the kelp stringers, only they won't bite any "normal" baits, find an area where the kelp is kinda close to the rocks, use a #4 or #6 hook and fill the hook with pea's (2 or 3) then take a handfull of peas and toss'em out into the kelp, then flyline the hook out on top of them and let it sink natural, if they're around, you should be hooked-up in short order. The Captain of the sportboat I go out on said he see's them picking at the moss on the side of the boat when its ankor'd in the harbor. Lastly, bring a couple of hand towls to lay over the fence where you rest your rod, to protect it, Good luck!...mutt.

OK, Santa Cruiz, comming down Hwy 1 stop off at that liquor store/bait shop at the southeren end of Moss Landing, they'll have pile or blood worms in there, kinda pricey, but they're "the stuff" you can also use the worms in the surf along the beaches for a good shot at a striper too, and don't forget to get some anchovys! a choice of baits is always a good thing!...mutt.

I have spent quite a few days diving in carmel and monterey. There are a lot more opaleye in that area than people think, as well as halfmoons.

Although I have seen most Opaleye caught with moss or frozen peas, I have caught them with mussel, ghost shrimp and even lug worms if memory serves.

I preffer a float set up, but a hi-low rig works too.

just came back from that area and even though the fishing conditions was not that great today i managed to catch and release over 30 perch within an hour...and most were pregnant...smallest was about 10" and the biggest one was around 17"...bait of choice was head on market shrimp
