After spending the last weekend with the girls at a Kid's event where my eldest caught the monster trout, I decided that Daddy needs his salt water fix. Time to break in the new rod that I ordered from Amazon. Looked at the surf condition and weather last night and it looks perfect surf wise but noticed that wind was forecasted to be a little on the strong side.

Oh well, like I said, I need to get my salt water fix. Headed to Pacific Grove/Carmel this morning and was at the spot around 7. First spot was more like a parking while fishing place and did not get any bites at all. One other guys was fishing with a small pole and did not get anything either. I moved a little bit south and found this rocky area with lots of mussels. I was being careful because I know I am just a little north of the MLPA zone. Fished it for 4 hours and got me some nice dinner for tonight. The Black & Yellow will be steamed Chinese style and the greenling I will let my mother-in-law decide. Bait was squid and frozen chovies. Only the greenling liked the squid. Had several bites that did did not commit. I know it couldn;t be the surf, because it was pretty calm.


New Surf rod with my Penn Battle 6500 loaded with 80 lb braid. I couldn't believe how flat the water is.




3 Black & Yellow, biggest at 13 1/2in. The greenling measured almost 17in. It fought pretty good swimming left to right, and almost jumped out of the water. A couple walked up and looked at my stringer. Left and walked back to their car, grabbed their fishing equipments and set up about 20 feet away from me. I left right after, I figured I have enough fish. Hope they did ok. The fish were definitely biting.

awesome is all i can say, i love those yummy fish, ill be there in that area soon, how far out in the first pic were you casting? out towards the kelp, what size weight did you use? just trying to get helpful info for when i hit that area in a month..tight lines

That's some nice fishing right there Ungo, way better than most. I do believe I saw you out there. I drive that area on my lunch break, and check out the ocean and fishermen. I usually leave people alone, unless I know they are PFIC. Now that I recognize your gear, I'll say hi next time. BTW that first spot you were fishing is pretty tough except for high tides.

Hey Ung, great job! Way to brave the strong wind. I was in the area last weekend with Gerrie and she caught a 19in grassie and I got a couple of BnYs. It was already a bit windy then. Nice looking setup as well. How do you like the Penn reel?

nice job on the rock fish.

thats looks similar to my okuma solaris surf rod. i run 20lb mono on it though. 80lb seems overkill for anything from shore. you running mono leaders?

The rod is a Lamiglas Surf King 11 ft and I normally use 6 oz torpedos, but because of the calm water, 4oz was good enough. I tried the kelp beds first but nothing in there. I caught 2 of the B&Y in the same hole up close. The greenling and the other B&Y casting as far as I can. Lots of nibbles and subtle bites.

You are right about the park & fish spot, it would have been better on a high tide. The water was so tempting because of the kelpbeds. I wasn't really expecting much on the second spot, so you could imagine how surprise I was of the result. Yeah, stop by and say hi next time. I normally wear a SF Giants hat - my lucky hat.

Hey Jun, do you like my new surf rod? I couldn't find the same one as yours. Fisherman's Warehouse said that they have been discontinued. The only difference is the blue design compared to the silver one that i got. The Penn reel is a little on the heavy side, I think around 23 oz. but I am happy with it. Strong drag, too. Congrats to your wife. Didn't she catch a 21 in. grassie in Point Arena? Don't tell me she's out fishing you now. When are we going for Stripers? They are showing up at the Delta now. Let me know. I will pick up some nice ghost shrimp.

dang, that water looks nice. havent been treated to that down here yet this year. loving all the black and yellows lately, such cool fish. they've been absent from my catch lately.

I also use the penn battle but i got the 8000 and its a monster love the rugged metal body and the solid design. I broke my daiwa surf emblem at the bottom where the cork handle is and now switched over to an ugly stik 12', i actually like the ugly stik more because of how much better it can cast 6oz + bait. I feel like most of the surf rods are Medium Heavy and cant sufficiently throw 6oz + bait just my 2cents. gj on the fish!

Nice dinner! Love fishing that area. I just got the same surf rod (at the same place) and like it. I also have a 12' Emblem which I also like.

Nice fish. I have that same rod and I bought it on amazon too. I have it paired with a Penn 850 SSM also with 80 lb braid which I mostly use for the salty surf. I recently purchased a St Crox Mojo surf which I'm itchin to try out.
