Out there, playing on the rocks and reefs again. I am such a lucky person.
High tide was at 9AM at 4.1ft.
Low tide was at 2:30PM at 0.7ft.
Good tides. Most agree that the best time to fish is two hours before and two hours after high tide. Though, sometimes low tide has some advantages - depending on where you’re fishing. I would be able to fish the high tide cycle, but also I would stay out to fish the lower water.

I got there at daybreak as usual. On the Central Coast, the wind will be usually blowing by 11:00. So, it’s important to get out there early if you can. Downside is, it’s early and rocks haven’t had time to dry off yet. So, slow and steady while climbing out on those wet, kelp covered rocks. You can plan all you want, but you can’t make the fish bite. No action at all until 9:00, which was high tide. Right at high tide, the black and yellows started biting. In the next hour, I caught three and missed another one. All fish were caught casting out as far as I could in the same area and using fresh smelt. Casting to the left, casting to the right, no bites. But right in that one spot was were the fish were holding - at least for an hour, anyway, until they moved on.

No more bites until 12:45 at almost low tide. Then, I caught a 15” grassie. A lot more difficult to bring in this bigger fish at close to low tide. A lot of the rocks were exposed and no wave help to get him in. But patience won out. It’s hard not to yank - have to wait for the fish and water to help you.

That was it. Had enough fish. The day had been foggy and overcast, but finally turned into a beautiful Spring day.

Black and yellow rockfish aren’t big, but they are good. They make perfect fish tacos.

Fish tacos are like meatloaf, everybody makes them different, but they are all good. And last, as always, our favorite - lemon butter caper sauce cooked at the Dutchmans in Morro Bay.

We go there often because I can bait fish before and after lunch and start the cycle all over again.

I’m sure you’ve seen this picture before, but coming up from the coast on Highway 46, you get a nice view of Morro Bay, the Rock and the green hills. Couldn’t pass it up now before all the hills turn brown - or, as we say, the “golden hills”.

Wife said "Go, instead of just drooling on the food that Walt's posting".

Whoohoo!! I will be there on the first week of June staying overnight. Looks like water movement is not that big that weekend.

Looking at those rocks, it's hard to picture an angle to cast without snagging. Unless you're actually jumping out and onto the far ones. How do you do it?

I get out on those far rocks at low tide. As the tide comes in, I keep retreating backward. You just have to cast across the rocks even though you get snagged and risk losing a fish. I also try to wait until a swell is coming in to try to reel in a bite. It will lift your sinker up to help get over the rocks. If you hook something, you just have to be patient - but that's part of the challenge.

Another bountiful trip to the rocks - nice BnYs and chunky grassie! And I'm craving fish 'n' chips again for some strange reason.

Salty.
