I have had a lot of luck in the back bay. Fished 4 times for "fish" every time.

Night 1: Large skate, 4' leopard, 1.5' leopard, couple of 50-100lb rays, round sting rays, one nice catch only to bend hook straight almost got spooled would have if hook hadnt straightened out

Night 2: Couple of smaller rays, skates, and sting rays

Night 3: 3 100lbish rays

Night 4: 1 rays, couple of skates, FISH THAT SPOOLED 80LB TEST (ALOT OF IT) DOWN TO MONO ON REEL TO BREAK AND LOSE ALL LINE Sad

I had at least 150 yards of 80lb spectra. Never even gave me a chance to turn whatever it was or reel in. Big Ray? Big shark? Any ideas????

UGH it is so frustrating and will bother me for weeks LOL

My fishing buddy does the honors of holdings the catch for me while I take pics so he can release while I run and cast out my pole again for another catch Wink

I've never been spooled by a leopard, but I think it was a BIG ray. If it was a steady pull definitely a ray. If a herky jerky tug, probably a HUGE shark. WTG on the leps.

Steady, consistent, non stop until it spooled me.

Show me proof of a ray over 200... I'm sure they're out there but 300lbs is just not realistic.

Good fishing csmerril, gotta love the bay.

cheap braid: amazon.com, cabelas.com's bargain cave
big rays: wikipedia lists them as growing up to 200 lbs ish. So your right. But then again, there are always anomalies.

What reel are you using for them?

If you get to Sports Authority, it is $30 with the 25% off coupon going now until April 10th. Alex, with his accounting did the math on it, as that is what he was going to get with the coupon, 300 yards of 80# Power Pro. Good rays, and I am supposing that Morro is full of kelp beds because I broke 100# braid on a lever-drag in kelp beds and never landed a batray out by Avalon the other year. Here's a tip I learned from an old guy:
When you get a bat ray running steady like that, try to torque down the drag a pinch then back off, let him run and repeat that a couple of times. He said the fluctuation in the resistance *sometimes* freaks them out and they turn or get disoriented and become easier to manage. I tried it and it worked for me, otherwise if he's too big and determined to run, there's nothing you can do.

If I get a big hit like that I torque down on him asap and not let them run too far. The longer the line is out, the easier it is to break. Something about the physics I think.

Good posting.

how thick was the mono under the braid? sounds like your drags are blown.. ive caught 100+ pounders on 20lb test both sharks and fatrays. 80lb braid can turn 300lb tuna.. maybe you had a tuna..

Yeah, with 80lb test, there shouldn't have been any reason to get spooled like that unless the reel was small, the drag was loose, or that was the mother of all rays. Sometimes you can just tell if there is a big BIG ray on your line and may have to tighten the drag just so they don't get on a run and start peeling a ton of line. I personally don't like doing that as the drag should have been set properly the first time and prefer to fight them down to the last yard of line.

I've got the 4500 and use it with 300 yards of 50# braid. You can't fit 300 yards of 80# braid on that reel. More line would be better than thicker line. I had a ray on the 4500 once in Marin (at Stan Low's spot) taking a long run, almost spooling my friend Rich that was using one of my rods that day. I took the rod, tightened down the drag, and turned the fish before he was near spooling. The fish (ray) came back in, but was still hot, and I actually straightened out a hook on it on the 50# power-pro but was not spooled. Many rays will keep going out until you show them 10# of drag at least or so - my experience. So, I am imaging you are NOT fighting through kelp in Morro where you are fishing.
