Well, I finally decided to try my hand at doing my own sinkers, so I would like to ask those more experienced in the subject to please share your do and don'ts on the subject.

I already decided, I'll be buying clean lead ingots from Ebay (seems to be the cheapest source), a Do-It mold and a Hot-Pot 2 to melt and pour the lead, but any inside tips/tricks and cautions, you can share it'll be greatly appreciated

Cheers!

I have been contemplating to send a PM to any member who needs it a how-to regarding making sinkers.

It would be very detailed, full of tips to go right to casting safely and with great results.

However, it requires some time, and I have not had the time for it. I also did not know how many people would like that kind of information.

So if you can have some patience, I will prepare it hopefully by middle of next month.
Not to derail this thread, but if I can have an indication of how many are interested, it would be a good motivation.

For now here are some tips:
Buying clean lead from Ebay is good, other lead can be cleaned too.
Do-it molds are the best. Hiltz is another one but not too many around. I bought most of mine on Ebay.
Buy the bigger capacity Lee pot. Shop around for the best buy. Ebay has some good used ones for sale.
Don’t waste money on hotpot-2.

Here is a new one for sale.

Warning—casting one sinker may lead you to buy more molds. I am up to 18 as of this writing.

I wish you could just drill holes in rocks and have a little scale to weight them (All it needs to weight is 2-4oz). That would make for some cheap easy weights to use. Not that friendly for fishing from the rocks... but would work great for off the piers...

Most important, SAFETY........Open area, gloves, long sleeves shirt, safety goggles.

NO MOISTURE inside a hot pot. It will "EXPLODE"

being ever broke, ive done stuff like that. hell even straight up wheel weights with a hole drilled in em aint a bad way to go in a pinch.. you can get some pretty good "jewelers scale"s on ebay for around $10 shipped.. same ones theyll sell in..... herbal medicine shops.... for 5 or 6 times that.

I have my own setup as well and made 2 batches (folgers can full)... and that lasted me about 2 years..

but i recently found someone that will trade me wheel weights for made weights.. so i just post ads on CL looking for free lead. and i scored 1 and a half- 5 gallon buckets of lead to trade for made lead.

i got about 20 lbs of lead for 1 5 gallon that will prob last me about me years and years to come..

i went over there last week and he said it exploded and got him near his eye, boat, tarp and everything near by...

ive seen videos on youtube with explosions, but never seen the aftermath in person. be very careful and if you want you can probaly trade him for made lead too if you are in the fairfield area.

i figure trading for made weights is better than risking my health (even tho they say it doesnt get hot enough to become toxic)and safety.

Molten lead and water do not mix.

Working safety is essential. Must be mindfull of safety at all times.

I have used nuts (the metal kind), that were in my car tool kit when I ran out of lead while rock fishing. Have no idea what they weighed, but they worked. I have also used the wheel weights.

You can also put a hook on a shiny nut and catch rockcod.

One trick I found was to pre-heat/warm up your mold B4 first pour. Prevents layering and lead clogs in pour opening. I'll let Mahi post his how-to then I'll add my experience.
