A couple of weeks ago, I fished a new area. I was provided guide service and fishing info from a couple of prominent Board members. They picked a low impact spot for me as I requested. I had a nice day but didn't catch a thing. Last week, I decided to revisit this area, bringing the wife along for a little holiday. I could fish, she could shop (not many shopping opportunities in a small town where we live). I could eat, she could shop/and or play with her Ipad. I picked a nice weather day and off we went.
A beautiful spot way north of where I usually fish.
My wife dropped me off and she went shopping and I went fishing. There's salt water, rocks, reefs, mussels, etc. All the ingredients for shore rock fishing. So even though I didn't catch anything here the first time, everything looked fishey! I knew there were fish there, I just had to figure it out. And I did! I found a nice rock where I caught two black and yellow rockfish.
Had another good bite that I missed - will never know what that was. Later in the afternoon, the wife showed up and I started getting hungry and I decided I had fished enough and it was time to look for someplace for a nice dinner. Which we did.
Next day, I got out to fish again in the same area. The weather had changed - wind was blowing onshore and the water was rougher but still fishable. I only had one bite but it was a 20" cab.
The fish stuck me a couple of times on the way in, but I was patient and used the waves to get him out of the kelp. Beautiful fish and I decided to release him. Once again, the wife showed up and we decided to have lunch before we headed back home.
If you see or hear of a place that looks fishey, go. Fish new spots! And give those spots more than one try. Rock fish and cabs are the same whether its Morro Bay, Half Moon Bay, Bodega Bay, or Humboldt Bay. Grab your sinkers and bait and go fishing!
Lastly, the black and yellows were filleted and taken to our favorite fish restaurant, Dutchmans, in Morro Bay.
Mrs. Kittyfish says this was a good way to combine fishing, shopping and dining for a quick get-away.
