A few days ago I was in San Diego's Mission Bay and because of the wind direction and lack of bite on the bay side, I faced the river side near the mouth and hoped to catch a corbina or some critters hiding in the shallow tidal wash.
There was a lot of salad in the water so I decided to drift it like nymphing (instead of strip). The late morning was partly cloudy but comfortable. I saw another guy on the dog beach side stripping with a basket. He had a fish on for a few seconds but it let go.
A few moments later I got a sudden yank and hooked the fish. The fish gave up, then had bursts of energy as it saw the shallows. Even when i finally saw that it was a halibut, it still had some energy to pull line out of my grasp.
In about 5 minutes he tired out and I pulled in a small halibut, about 16 inches. released.
bait: shrimp-like fly
gear: 9wt, floating line
