I was going to get a striper on my fly rod. On tuesday the 24th, I yaked out to my first favorite spot, but decided to warm up by tossing plugs. Nothing. Not vibing out on that, I wanted the skunk off my back, so I went to a muddy, just one fish would pep my confidence back up.
Six or seven fish later, 24s to 28s, on nearly consecutive casts, I finally went to the fly rod. Yea, I'm sick.
I threw for almost four hours. Nothing. I went back to bait. I lost count of the fish to hand. It was sick.
Being the sick dude, I thought, "circle hook to 8wt. and a live muddie, drifted on a slow troll, no need to set on the fish, just load up. I missed the first two; it takes a very long time for a fly rod to finish its load. For the next few hours I had a blast. Those fish made me look so stupid. I about fell out of the boat a half dozen times and during one of the many crazy moments, my bailless reel on a just finished rod, took a dive. Evidently the line slipped off the roller and the fish snagged it and took it for a swim. Crazy, crazy fishing trip. Sorry. No pics because I borrow a camera so I don't want to take the chance of it going swimming too.

Oh, imho, the fish this year, because they've had a longer time to feed in the bay, are THICK and STRONG. I'm not saying I'm right about the connection between not enough rain to make the migration and their larger than normal girth.

I'm going back out in a minute to see if the gods still love me.

You make the strangest posts. Makes me wonder what you are doing when you are not fishing. Or while you are fishing.

That's all I'm gonna say.

Hahaha. I find them amusing at times. That's solid fishing. I hope to get my striper game on your level some day!

Live bait w/circle hook on a fly rod - what a concept! Sounds like you had a blast. You have some interesting ideas, and some of them obviously work.

Salty.

Ms.CM, When fishing, I'm fishing. When not fishing, well, that's another story.

mutt, yup, and the OG real was a tough cookie. I really liked it. Karma, probably: Live bait on a fly rod, come on, I was just asking for it.

Here's and example of the thickness I was talking about. She'd somehow inhaled the circle and was bleeding, had to bonk her.

SS: Chubby's a good way of putting it. It's that body style that made it possible for them to sulk below me and head shake.

itsakeeper, bro, I'm just sorry we didn't do a lot better. I know as soon as we bailed it went off. Ah fishing.

Yea dude; it's parked out front. It hasn't even sunk in yet. Now, all I need is a rack and a shell. Almost there now.

You live right by the Marina? I've been going for walks there Mondays to help rehab my back. I've seen some pretty wacky stuff down there lately. Surprised by the number of people that fish there in the evenings.
