|I didn't make it to Berkeley in time to pick up any live anchovies, but I did get a bag of frozen chovies. I tossed one out on a sliding sinker rig (4/0 octopus hook and 2oz cannonball sinker) and cast a couple out on a hi-lo (4/0 octopus hooks and 4oz pyramid sinker). About halfway through the incoming tide, line starts peeling off one of my reels. A few headshakes conviced me that I had a small shark on, but it turned out to be a 26" halibut. I caught the fish with my hi-lo setup. That made my day.
One of my friends hooked a little soupfin that was covered with sea lice later, also on frozen chovy. I packed it up and left with my friends as the sun started to go down.
Compared to what I saw last week, the halibut coming over the side are smaller with many sub-legal fish being caught.
Here's a pic of what an anchovy must see before it's swallowed.
