California Pier Report — May 2011

Central California

San Luis Obispo County Piers

Pismo Beach Pier — No reports although surfperch should be showing. How To Get There: From the north, take Hwy. 101 to the Five Cities Dr. exit; follow Dolliver into the middle of town, then turn west on Pomeroy and follow it to the pier and parking lot. From the south, take the Pismo Beach Exit (Price St.), follow it to Pomeroy; turn west and follow it to the pier.

Avila Pier – Louis at the Avila Pier Bait Shop says things are slow. There have been some surfperch inshore, some jacksmelt on top, and some large bat rays landed. But, overall, it’s slow. BTW, until the end of May the shop will only be open on Saturdays and Sundays, 9-5. How To Get There: Take Hwy. 101 to Avila Rd. and go west; turn left off of Avila Rd. on to Front St. and follow it to the pier.

Port San Luis (Harford) Pier — Kurt, at Patriot Sportfishing on the pier, said action has been real slow, a few crabs and basically no fish. How To Get There: Take Hwy. 101 to the Avila Rd. turnoff and head west; follow the road to the end and the pier.

Morro Bay T-Piers – Recent PFIC reports indicate the leopard sharks and bat rays may be in the bay. Perch should be available down by the pilings. How To Get There: From Highway 1 turn south onto Main Street, follow it to Morro Bay Boulevard, turn left toward the bay and follow it to Embarcadero, turn right and follow Embarcadero to the end of the public parking which adjoins the piers.

Cayucos Pier —No report, need a new reporter. How To Get There: Take Highway 1 to either Ocean Boulevard, which is the main street and will take you past the pier, or take the Cayucos Drive exit which will take you straight to the pier.

San Simeon Pier — No report. How To Get There: Highway 1 to the entrance to the park.

Monterey-Santa Cruz-San Mateo County Piers

Monterey Wharf #2 —PFIC reports indicate some mackerel have been caught. They’re in and out but when present they can be caught in good numbers. How To Get There: From Highway 1 take the central Monterey exit and follow Del Monte Avenue to Figueroa Street, turn right and follow to the wharf.

Seacliff State Beach Pier — No report. How To Get There: How To Get There: From Highway 1 take the State Park Drive exit; follow the road west to the park entrance.

Capitola Wharf — No report this month. How To Get There: From Highway 1 take the Bay Avenue exit west until it hits Capitola Avenue where you turn right; stay on this to Cliff Drive, turn right and park wherever you can find a spot.

Santa Cruz Wharf — Cristina, at Andy’s Bait and Tackle, said things are pretty dead. She said the biggest fish she saw landed the morning I called was a 6-inch halibut (that was probably a sanddab). She said even the crabs have been small. How to Get There: There are many ways to get to the wharf, the way I usually go is to take Ocean Street south from Highway 1; when you get to Laurel Street turn right and follow it to Pacific Street, turn left and follow Pacific to the wharf.

Pillar Point Pier — No report. How To Get There: From Highway 1 simply take the Pillar Point Harbor turnoff and follow the road down to the main parking lot. This pier is to the far right of the parking lot

Pacifica Pier – No report. How To Get There: Take Highway 1 to Pacifica, take the Paloma Avenue-Francisco Boulevard exit, take Paloma west to Beach Road, turn left and proceed a short way until you see markers indicating the way to Fort Point, turn left on Long Avenue and it will take you down to the pier.

I was out at the Coast Guard jetty for some time.

I believe that I spotted opaleye in the water, but I did not have appropriate tackle for them. I caught nothing.

The day was sunny and clear; the ocean calm.

I think I need to go get some peas for the opaleye and go back there.

I go fishing at Cayucos All the time!almost every day... email me for info about Pier fishing in Cayucos will report another time. going out tonight! Lots of dog shark. they bite all night. Will post pics sometime this week... the best time to fish for them is evening hours between 5pm and dusk... they like mackerel, anchovie tail (so i have been told), and squid. That seems to be the best time for fishing for them. last monday got two of them within 5 minutes around 7 or 730pm. dont forget rope gaff or crab net to haul the catch. we catch amd release. apparently Ling cod (legal ones) have been caught about 1am on whole small mackeral too... so i have heard!!

Fish on!

Went to cayucos tonight for nada fished 6 to 10... gave morrro bay a try from 1030 to 3 am for one BIG "fish" within the hour, pulled lots of drag out and line snapped! Ouch! It was a monster... probably a leopard ... only had 20-30 lb test time for some bigger new line (thinking 50)... am hour later got a keeper rock cod and bites and crab all night ( threw them all back)... about 3 am a few large boats came in lights on shining in my area so i jigged a shrimp fly rig ( as if i was drifting) for 4 rockcod about 10-12'' on each of my 4 cast (one fish per cast) lost two of them though so came home with 3 rock fish not bad for pier fishing! All caught on mix of mackerel and squid seemed to like the mackerel... im buying a spot light for next fishing trip!

Sweet, I love morro bay. There's so many different ways to fish there. You should post your reports in the Pier and Surf section for sure!
