located near submarine canyons—primarily Newport. Balboa, Redondo and Monterey Wharf #2. I caught them on two occasions back in the early '60s when I was a Newport pier rat. I also caught several hake and though I've taken them while fishing for rockcod out of Santa Cruz, and salmon fishing out of Fort Bragg, I haven't caught any from any other piers. However, I believe people reported catching some at Pacifica and I would think both the Monterey Wharf #2 and Santa Cruz would see a few. But, I could be wrong.

By the way, all the hake I caught at Newport were in the very early hours, i.e., 4-5 A.M. Since the pier restricted the hours (it was once open 24 hours day) it might make it a little hard to see another caught.
